COVID_19 and child anxiety

By, S Adeeb Mujtaba Ali

In the present article I would like to cover a topic which holds high significance. It is Covid_19 and children. Ever since  2020 commenced, children were exposed to many global issues, and no physical access to school was a huge addition to build up anxiety. Counselors have been doing their very best to help families and children steer through this distasteful situation in their best capacity.

A dive into strategies employed by Counselors to help children:

Fair, open and clear communication

Children by nature are curious about the happenings around them. They absorb from their surroundings and try to act accordingly. Plus they also need some one around with whom they can continue to share and exchange information. By keeping a window open for exchange of information with Children and explain them things clearly along with understanding the situation is always helpful.
It is better to explain a child about existence of virus in the environment, that can cause infection through teaching learning aids, making them understand the sensitivity of the situation, importance of social distancing by self practicing, is the best model. Than compared to shutting them and enforcing  to do something without explanation is harsh and unwarranted. In this closed communication model child might not learn the actuals of COVID_19. Therefore have a clear communication it will help.

Worry Train your child:

Yes, train your child to not to worry. A person (a child) see a worry as a dragon, so better teach your child to how to tame the dragon? An approach suggested by Jane Garland and Sandra Clark in their book -Taming Worry Dragons: A Manual for Children, Parents and Other Coaches.
Some of the skills suggested by senior child Counselors are:

Schedule, get involved in some creative activities and have a me time/ family time routine.

1) Schedule:
Teach your child to have a 'worry time' to think of all the negative possibilities. After this worry time, they are not suppose to worry rest of the time.
This is a proven formula and suggested by experienced children counselors. One of the way the worry dragon can be tamed.

2) Involve in creative activities

Make them draw, write, play with colors, or make illustration of their worry dragons. This is again a very constructive activity to help your child open up and express themselves in a better way.

3) A routine

Have a routine, family time, me time where child can feel and sense harmony. To feel protected and secure. A very warm and comfortable approach against the worry dragon.

These are some of the strategies which helps in combating worries and anxiety in children.
It helps them to stay calm and composed, informed and grounded when they loose a loved one due to COVID_19.

Mucormycosis: 2021 Epidemic ???

It would be unjustifiable for me to not chronicle this issue as a microbiologist.                                            Image credits:  Pathology Outlines - Zygomycetes Mucormycosis (formerly known as zygomycosis) is a severe but uncommon fungal illness caused by mucormycetes, a kind of mould. Molds may be found in many kinds of places. Mucormycosis is a fungal infection that mostly affects persons who have health issues or who use medications that reduce the body's capacity to resist infections and illness. After breathing fungal spores from the air, it most often affects the sinuses and lungs. It can also happen after a cut, a burn, or any other form of skin damage. While we work to defend ourselves against COVID-19 and live with it, there is another threat posed by a fungus that we must be aware of and respond to. During or after recovery, a few COVID-19 patients ha...

Counseling psycology: History

By S Adeeb Mujtaba Ali Since the dawn of society, counseling has been an important part. Right from grandparents to parents advising other family members followed by providing guidance to residents by community leaders, counseling has always been an important and organic part of the human experience. During the Industrial Revolution era when people and their mobility increased by migrating to other lands, the traditional essence of counselors was lost due to separation from their families and communities. Following which there was a communication gap, people started feeling isolated and led them to approach for psychiatric help or landing to asylums.  In present times people started opting for modern psychiatry, which is nothing but professional counseling, a current trend taking rounds to keep a check on mental health. However, the presence of inefficient mental health institutes led to, a mental hygiene movement —headed by a cohort of psychiatrists,...

Practical learning vs theoretical learning

The most contentious topic of discussion: theory vs. practical knowledge. Some believe that students should study more about practical courses such as computer degree programs, technical degree programs, and so on. Others, however, believe that students should learn about theoretical subjects such as history and science. But first, let's know what this term implies, and what theory is. In our educational system, theories about knowing basic life fundamentals meet with any topic, such as science, mathematics, english, geography, and history. Theoretical knowledge, then, is the understanding of what is true. Theoretical knowledge may assist you in comprehending the underlying notion and understanding how something works and how it works. The term "theoretical knowledge" refers to learning something without applying it in practice. It explains why one is more successful and the other is unsuccessful. Theoretical knowledge may help you grasp a notion better by allowing you t...
